Project Description

Meetup’s mission is to revitalize the local community and help people around the world self-organize.  Meetup believes that people can change their personal world, or the whole world, by organizing themselves into groups that are powerful enough to make a difference.  Meetup was co-founded by CEO Scott Heiferman, CFO Brendan McGovern, and Matt Meeker, Entrepreneur in Residence of Polaris Ventures, and co-founder of BarkBox.

Meetup enables the simple idea of using the Internet to get people off the Internet. People feel a need to commune or get together and talk about what’s important to them. Meetup makes it easy for anyone to organize a local group or find one of the thousands already meeting up face-to-face. More than 9,000 groups get together in local communities each day, each one with the goal of improving themselves or their communities. Meetup launched in January, 2002, and today boasts nearly 126,000 Meetup groups worldwide, with more than 9,000 new groups created in June 2013 alone. Meetup’s biggest categories are moms, small business, health support and fitness.
